Day 27 - Sunset Walk

A reminder of my why: This 30-day nervous system novelty challenge is my commitment to growth through conscious discomfort. Each day, I'm inviting my system to expand by stepping into experiences that stretch me beyond my familiar patterns.

Day 27 was what I called an "easy grab"—after a full day of work, I drove down to Seal Beach to catch the sunset with my friend Mary, who had recently moved there. Sometimes the nervous system challenge doesn't need to be dramatic; sometimes it's about choosing connection and presence when the easier option would be staying home.

We walked and talked along the beach, that particular rhythm of conversation that happens when your feet are moving and the horizon is wide. There's something about sunset walks that creates perfect conditions for the kind of meandering dialogue that nourishes friendship—no agenda, no time pressure, just the luxury of being present with someone you care about.

We met a yoga instructor who mentioned doing classes in the park overlooking the pier. The idea of practicing yoga with that view, that ocean air, stirred something in me—a reminder of possibilities for movement and mindfulness that exist right in my own backyard if I'm willing to explore them.

Then we witnessed a man catch a shovelnose guitarfish off the pier, and I felt that familiar mixed reaction I have to certain kinds of fishing. I love the sport of fishing, the patience and skill it requires, but there's something about certain catches that stirs uncomfortable feelings in me. The guitarfish, with its unusual shape and ancient lineage, felt more like witnessing the capture of something that belonged to a different world entirely.

That's it. Simple day, simple challenge. But sometimes simple is exactly what the nervous system needs—the gentle expansion that comes from choosing to show up for a friend, to walk instead of sit, to witness a sunset instead of missing it while caught up in the day's remaining tasks.

Not every challenge needs to activate fight-or-flight responses. Sometimes growth looks like the commitment to presence, to friendship, to stepping outside when the day is ending beautifully and someone you care about invites you to share it.

The "easy grab" reminded me that consistency matters more than intensity. Day 27 of 30—showing up doesn't always have to be hard. Sometimes it just has to be intentional.
