Day 7: Beet Kraut “New” Breakfast Food
My 30-Day Nervous System Novelty Challenge
My registered dietitian is a good reminder that I need to continually support my gut with minerals and nutrients. When you hold a lot of stress and discomfort in your work, especially as a healer, it's easy to run on empty if we aren't careful. She encouraged me to add some probiotic goodness to my usual two-egg-and-avocado breakfast that I'm almost always having.
Enter: beet kraut.
This got a good laugh from my son, who happened to be in the kitchen during my first attempt. Picture the sour face—that's exactly what happened to me. I think the problem was timing. I'd just taken a sip of my coffee (which has maple syrup in it), so sweet meeting this sharp kraut was... not good.
But the next day, I tried again. My son tried it too this time. The key was eating it first, before anything else touched my palate. No sour face for either of us.
Now I mix it with my avocado, which actually works really well. The creamy texture balances out that sharp fermented tang, and I get those beneficial bacteria my gut apparently needs.
Did it give me gut health? I'd like to believe it did. At the very least, it didn't hurt my stomach, which feels like a win when you're trying something new that your body might reject.
There's something to be said for small acts of self-care that happen before the day gets complicated. Adding this little bit of fermented earth to my morning feels like tending to the underground parts of myself that keep everything else running.
Healers need healing too. Sometimes it comes in a jar of beet-colored probiotics that make your teenager laugh.
New things can stretch us - big or small. Day 7 has taught me I’m quicker to take action to try something new due to committing to this 30 day challenge.
What do you do for gut health? I'm always curious about the small practices that keep us grounded and nourished. email me @ dr.kimber@drkimber.net to share.
